BNP leader Dablu’s death in Jibannagar unacceptable: ISPR

The Inter Services Public Relations Directorate, ISPR, has described the death of Jibannagar municipality BNP general secretary Shamsuzzaman Dablu as unwanted, tragic and in no way acceptable. The army personnel who took part in the operation have been withdrawn to the cantonment, and a high-level investigation committee has been formed.

The information was shared in a statement posted on ISPR’s verified Facebook page on January 13.

ISPR said that legal action will be taken under army law against anyone found guilty following the investigation.

According to ISPR, based on specific intelligence, a joint forces team carried out a special operation to recover illegal arms in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district at around 11pm on January 12. During the operation, Md Shamsuzzaman, also known as Dablu, 50, was detained from a pharmacy near the Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex on allegations of possessing illegal weapons.

Acting on information provided by the detainee, the patrol team searched the pharmacy and recovered a 9mm pistol, one magazine and four rounds of ammunition. After the operation, Shamsuzzaman suddenly fell ill and lost consciousness, following which he was rushed to the Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead at around 12:25am.

ISPR added that to determine the exact cause of the incident, the camp commander concerned and all army personnel involved in the operation have been withdrawn to the cantonment, and a high-level probe committee has already begun work.
