BNP leader found dead in mysterious circumstances in Bagerhat

A BNP leader was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his home in Ranbijoypur village of Bagerhat Sadar upazila on Saturday, July 11. Police recovered the body of Abul Kalam Chakladar, 55, in the afternoon.

Chakladar was an executive member of Shatgombuj Union BNP and a ward-level BNP leader. He had also served in various committees of Sadar Upazila BNP in the past.

Relatives said he had been living alone for over a year while his wife and children stayed in the city. On Saturday morning, a relative went to his home with food and found the door open. Chakladar was found sitting on a bed with a towel tied around his neck, hanging from a window. He was declared dead at the scene.

The relative, Yasmin Begum, said she does not believe it is a suicide and demanded a proper investigation.

Police have sent the body to Bagerhat District Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Upazila BNP organiser Kamruzzaman Shimul said Chakladar had been facing family turmoil in recent months. He demanded an impartial investigation to uncover the truth.

Bagerhat Sadar Police Station OC Shamsul Arefin said, "The body has been sent for autopsy. Whether it is murder or suicide will be confirmed after the autopsy report. Police are investigating the matter seriously."
