BNP leader hacked to death in Narayanganj, road blockade

A BNP leader has allegedly been hacked to death in Narayanganj's Araihazar over a dispute over land cutting. In protest of the murder, relatives of the deceased, Osman Gani, 40, and party leaders and activists blocked the Araihazar-Gauchia road since Thursday morning (May 21) and vandalized several vehicles.

The incident took place at 1:45 am on Wednesday (May 20) in the Kaunder Chowk area adjacent to the Beel in Panchgaon Charpara area of ​​Duptara Union of the upazila. The deceased Osman Gani was the general secretary of Brahmandi Union BNP.

According to police and local sources, supporters of Duptara Union Swechchhasebak Dal Member Secretary Ramzan Ali attacked Osman Gani at midnight over a dispute over land cutting with a veku (a type of weapon used to cut land). Later, locals rescued him and took him to Jabed Ali Memorial Hospital in Araihazar. When his condition deteriorated there, the doctor on duty advised him to be transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. However, he died before reaching there.

Tension spread in the area after the murder. Since Thursday morning, relatives of the deceased and BNP leaders and activists have been blocking various places on the Araihazar-Gauchia road and vandalizing several vehicles.

In this regard, Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Alauddin said that additional police have been deployed to control the situation. Four people have been detained and questioned in the incident. The operation to identify and arrest those involved in the murder is ongoing. In addition, the police are also working to normalize vehicle movement on the road.
