BNP leader served show-cause notice for chanting 'Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu'

A BNP leader in Sirajganj has been served a show-cause notice by the district BNP for chanting "Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu" after concluding his speech at a programme.

Mintu Sheikh, president of Sirajganj municipality's Ward No. 11 BNP, made the remarks at a human chain programme on Thursday morning (August 27) at Moti Saheber Ghat in the city, organised to protest against alleged propaganda against Sirajganj mayoral candidate Haji Abdus Sattar. After his speech, he chanted the slogans. A video of the incident later went viral on social media.

The show-cause notice issued by the district BNP stated that while holding a responsible party position, Mintu Sheikh had used the slogan of the fallen and banned Awami League—prompted by the July uprising—and asked why organisational action should not be taken against him. He has been asked to submit a written explanation to the district BNP president and general secretary within three working days.

District BNP Office Secretary Tanvir Mahmud Palash confirmed the matter. He said the video of Mintu Sheikh chanting the slogans came to the attention of district BNP leaders after it spread on social media, and the decision to issue a show-cause notice was taken organisationally.

The notice was issued with the approval of district BNP president and former MP Rumana Mahmud and district BNP general secretary and BNP central executive committee member Saidur Rahman Bachchu.
