BNP leaders allegedly assault supporters of Rumeen Farhana

BNP leaders and activists have been accused of assaulting two supporters of Member of Parliament Barrister Rumeen Farhana in front of the Ashuganj Upazila Parishad in Brahmanbaria on Wednesday afternoon. The injured men are Ataur Rahman, former convener of the Ashuganj Upazila unit of Jubo Dal, and former senior joint convener Russel Biplob. The upazila BNP, however, said the incident involved a scuffle following an argument over an issue related to drugs.
Ataur Rahman and Russel Biplob are currently known to be supporters of MP Rumeen Farhana.

The Abdul Kadir Shah Library in Kholapara village of Ashuganj has organised a reception for meritorious students who passed the 2026 SSC examinations. On Tuesday, library president Ataur Rahman submitted a written application to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), seeking overall cooperation and allocation of the auditorium for the event.

The application said the Abdul Kadir Shah Library has been working to promote education in the rural area since 2018. It is a private library listed with the Department of Public Libraries.

The reception is scheduled to be held at 3pm on September 18 at the auditorium of the Ashuganj Upazila Parishad. Rumeen Farhana, MP for Brahmanbaria-2, which comprises Sarail, Ashuganj and part of Bijoynagar, is expected to attend the event as the chief guest. The UNO has also been invited as a special guest.

Sources associated with the library said Ataur Rahman and Russel Biplob went to the Upazila Parishad around 11:30am on Wednesday to inquire about preparations for the reception. As they approached the UNO’s office, they saw Upazila BNP President Shahjahan Siraj, General Secretary Habibur Rahman and Organising Secretary Kamal Hossain speaking with the UNO. They did not enter the room and instead went downstairs and stood across from the Upazila Parishad to talk.

Russel Biplob said, “We were standing across from the Upazila Parishad and talking. Around the time of Zuhr prayers, Upazila BNP General Secretary Habibur Rahman came with his men and launched a sudden attack on us. Since Rumin Farhana was elected as an MP, BNP leaders and activists have regarded us as political opponents.”

However, Upazila BNP General Secretary Habibur Rahman said, “There was an argument with our people over an issue related to drugs, and at one point they got into a scuffle. I sent them away.”
Ashuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Jamal Hossain said, “An unpleasant incident took place on the field behind the Upazila Parishad. Rumin Farhana is the honourable Member of Parliament. If she wants, the reception will certainly be held.”
