A group of armed assailants allegedly intercepted and vandalised a private car belonging to Sylhet metropolitan BNP President Nasim Hossain before looting around Tk 50.50 lakh in cash in South Surma.

The incident took place around 10:30am in the Parairchak area under Moglabazar on Friday (May 8).

According to Nasim Hossain, who also serves as a divisional distributor of mobile financial service provider bKash, the cash was being transported to business agents in different areas, including Fenchuganj, as banks remained closed for the day.

He said a team of bKash officials and staff members was carrying the money in a private vehicle when a group of men arriving on motorcycles blocked the car’s path at gunpoint. The attackers allegedly smashed the vehicle and fled with the cash. Five officials and employees were reportedly inside the car during the attack.

Following the incident, a complaint was filed with Moglabazar Police Station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) later in the day.

Confirming the matter, SMP Additional Deputy Commissioner and Media Officer Mohammad Manzurul Alam said police have begun verifying the allegations and launched an investigation into the incident.
