Rumeen Farhana, member of the parliament for Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, has said that the mismanagement of BNP leaders and activists could lead to serious consequences for the party.

She made the remarks after facing obstructions by a faction of local BNP activists while paying tribute to language martyrs at the Central Shaheed Minar in Brahmanbaria's Sarail on Friday night (February 20).

Speaking to reporters, Farhana said the violence was “entirely premeditated” and demonstrated “extreme aggression.”

She alleged that as the member of parliament elected under the Warrant of Precedence, he was supposed to lay flowers at 12:01am first, but some BNP leaders and activists attacked him and his supporters.

“After 17 years, BNP has returned to government. If party leadership fails to control activists at the top level, this could be extremely damaging for the party,” Farhana said.

She blamed the violence on frustration from electoral defeat and failed financial dealings, carried out by a few “thug-like” party members.

The incident took place shortly before midnight, when former BNP General Secretary Anwar Hossain led some activists in shouting “fake, fake” slogans and forcibly removed Farhana’s floral tribute.

Police intervened to restore order, while supporters briefly blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in protest.

The traffic resumes on the road an hour later following administrative assurances.
