BNP supporter wounded in post-campaign attack in Jhenaidah
A supporter of the BNP’s sheaf of paddy symbol was injured in an attack while returning home after election campaigning in Jhenaidah’s Sadar upazila.
The incident took place around 9:00pm in Miakundu village on Monday night (February 9).
The victim, Thandu Mondol, 56, had been campaigning in Bamanail village under the Jhenaidah-4 parliamentary constituency and was on his way home with another supporter, Liptu Khan.
According to police and local sources, a group of 10 to 15 people attacked them upon reaching Miakundu village, injuring Thandu Mondol with sharp weapons.
The injured man said the attackers were local residents and alleged the assault was linked to a previous dispute that resurfaced during the election period.
Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital emergency physician Dr Tapas Kumar said Thandu Mondol sustained multiple sharp-weapon injuries to his leg, but his condition is stable.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Outpost said preliminary findings indicate the incident occurred in connection with election campaigning.
"An investigation is underway and legal action will be taken based on the findings," he added.
