BNP will not have multiple candidates competing in local government elections, said Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu. He said the party would finalise one candidate for each electoral area through internal coordination.

He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary celebrations organised by the Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP at around 8:30am on Tuesday (1 September).

Mizanur Rahman Minu said BNP is a major political party in the country, so it is natural for several party leaders to express interest in contesting elections. However, the party will ultimately select a single candidate through discussions and coordination, he said.

He added that the party plans to ensure a single BNP candidate in every area for local government elections.

The founding anniversary programme began with the hoisting of the national and party flags. Later, Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu released balloons and set free pigeons as part of the celebrations.

A colourful rally was subsequently held in Rajshahi city to mark the anniversary.

The rally began at Butter Mor and passed through Malopara Manichattar and Zero Point before ending at Alupotti Mor. Leaders and activists from various levels of the metropolitan and district BNP took part.

The programme, held in front of the Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP office, was attended by reserved-seat MP Mahmuda Habiba, Metropolitan BNP President Mamun-or-Rashid, General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Riton and other party leaders.

Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP also organised various programmes throughout the day to mark the party’s founding anniversary.
