BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the party trusts nothing except election, despite the current law and order situation. Speaking at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Wednesday while welcoming the July Declaration, he said, “BNP does not believe in anything without election.”

Fakhrul expressed hope that the declaration would help end the political deadlock and pave the way for a democratic transition.

Salahuddin Ahmed, member of BNP’s standing committee, said that the issues agreed upon by political parties should be implemented by the next elected parliament. “This is the only constitutionally legitimate process,” he added.

Salahuddin also stated that BNP agrees with the views of the chief adviser.

The 28-point July Declaration was read out on Tuesday by chief adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus on the anniversary of the fall of the dictatorship.

The declaration demands proper state and constitutional recognition of the 1971 student-mass uprising and calls for its inclusion in the schedule of the reformed constitution by the government elected in the next election.
