BNP wants fair election, Bangladesh first on India issue: Tarique Rahman
For the first time in two decades, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has spoken extensively to the media about Bangladesh’s politics, reforms, the interim government and relations with India. Speaking virtually from London in a special interview with BBC Bangla, he outlined his party’s position on elections, reforms and the BNP’s future direction. The second part of the interview was published on Tuesday, October 7.
Tarique said the interim government’s role is political, not personal. “We want this government to succeed. That means ensuring reforms where necessary, as well as holding a fair, neutral and independent election.”
He noted that doubts about the government’s neutrality arose as it delayed declaring an election roadmap, but said those concerns eased once chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus announced a firm timeline.
On the 1/11 army-backed government, Tarique described it as “ill-motivated and destructive”, saying it tried to depoliticise the country and push it into darkness.
He stressed that BNP’s ultimate goal is sovereignty, accountability and building a strong democratic foundation. Referring to Bangladesh’s garment industry and remittances from expatriates, he said both were initiated under BNP governments.
On foreign policy, Tarique said BNP’s principle is clear: “Bangladesh first.” He insisted the country must secure its share of river water and that border killings such as Felani’s cannot be accepted.
He defended BNP’s “note of dissent” on certain reform issues, arguing that democracy requires space for disagreement. “If BNP differs, that is not anti-democratic—it is the essence of democracy,” he said.
On whether BNP will prioritise the “31 points” or the July charter, Tarique said there is no hidden agenda: “What we commit publicly is what we will do if we form government.”
He added that consensus reforms agreed at the commission will be implemented first, followed by the BNP’s 31-point commitments.
