BNP-Jamaat activists clash in Patharghata, 4 injured

At least four people have been injured in clashes between activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Patharghata, Barguna. The clashes occurred around 12:00 pm on Wednesday in the Khamarer Hat area of the upazila.

The injured are: Tipu, 36, son of Sultan Akon from Kalipur area of Kathaltali union and a BNP leader; Mostafizur Rahman, 40, son of Sofiz Uddin and a Jamaat Rukan; Jasim Uddin, 40, son of Abul Kashem and a Jamaat activist; and Jamaat leader Jalal Hossain, 60.

Injured Jamaat individuals alleged that a group led by Solaiman Sadik, nephew of BNP candidate Nurul Islam Monir from Barguna-2 (Betagi-Bamna-Patharghata) constituency, attacked activists of Jamaat candidate Sultan Ahmed from the same constituency. Jasim Uddin was seriously injured. He has been sent to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka for advanced treatment. Others have been admitted to the upazila health complex.

Meanwhile, the family of BNP leader Tipu claimed that Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked Tipu's residence. Several individuals including Bashar Mollah, Nazrul, Tushar and Noman were named in this regard. The family alleged that one of Tipu's legs was broken in the attack. He is currently undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.

Patharghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mongchenla said clashes are occurring in various areas centring the election. Police are working to keep the situation under control. Legal action will be taken upon receiving written complaints following investigation.
