A clash broke out between activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Atwari upazila of Panchagarh, leaving several people from both sides injured.

The incident took place on Monday night, February 9, in the Ramzanpara area of Dhamor union in Atwari upazila.

According to BNP activists, Jamaat supporters tore down election banners of BNP candidate Barrister Muhammad Nawshad Jamir bearing the sheaf of paddy symbol while holding a procession with the water lily symbol in the area. When BNP activists protested, an argument ensued, which later escalated into scuffles and clashes.

Dhamor union BNP president Ashraful Islam and several other BNP activists were injured in the incident. Four of the injured were admitted to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital.

On the other hand, activists of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat alleged that BNP activists blocked their way by placing tree logs on the road and attacked them while they were returning after a rally and procession in Atwari upazila. Several people, including a woman, were injured. Two of the injured were admitted to Atwari Upazila Health Complex.

After the clash, 11-party alliance nominated candidate Sarjis Alam visited the spot and later went live on Facebook, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.

Later at night, BNP candidate Barrister Nawshad Jamir visited the injured BNP activists at Panchagarh Sadar Hospital. He said attacks on party activists are never acceptable and that law enforcement agencies had been informed, urging necessary action.

Officer-in-charge of Atwari police station said the clash had taken place and injured persons from both sides were receiving treatment. No written complaint has been filed yet, he added, saying legal action would be taken after investigation if complaints are received.
