BNP’s dawn-to-dusk hartal underway
A dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its like-minded parties is underway across the country on Thursday (November 30). The hartal started at 6am and will continue till 6pm.
On Monday afternoon, the party announced the programme at a virtual press briefing, demanding polls under a non-party interim government. Earlier, the 24-hour blockade enforced by the BNP and its ally on Wednesday morning was marked by stray incidents of torching vehicles.
The opposition parties’ hartal is meant to register their protest against the schedule for the next national election announced by the Election Commission (EC), and to mount pressure on the government to quit, hold the next election under a non-party neutral government and release the opposition leaders and activists, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgi
