Boat capsizes during idol immersion: Body of one missing child recovered

The body of a four-year-old girl was recovered after a boat capsized during idol immersion in the Turag River on Bijoya Dashami. Another child remains missing.

The incident took place near Chapair Bridge in Kaliakair upazila. The deceased has been identified as Ankita Rani Das, 4, while a 10-year-old boy named Tanmoy is still unaccounted for.

According to eyewitnesses, the family had boarded an engine-driven boat for the immersion ceremony on Thursday afternoon. The boat collided with another vessel and overturned. Eighteen people were on board; most managed to swim to safety, but Ankita and Tanmoy went missing. Relatives were seen mourning late into the night.

Fire Service officer Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain Raihan Chowdhury said rescue operations could not be conducted effectively at night. Ankita’s body was recovered on Friday morning, and efforts to locate Tanmoy are ongoing.
