Bodies of 2 students killed during student movement exhumed in Cumilla
Police have exhumed bodies of two individuals who were killed during the anti-discrimination student movement in Daudkandi, Cumilla. Following a court order for the investigation of the case, their bodies were exhumed from the grave on Saturday (October 26).
The deceased are Mohammad Rifat (16), son of the late Abdul Hamid from Sukipur village in Daudkandi, and Mohammad Babu Mia (23), a day laborer and son of auto-rickshaw driver Abdul Mannan from Tuzarbhanga village.
On August 4, Rifat was shot in the chest during the anti-discrimination student movement in Daudkandi and succumbed to his injuries that same night. His family buried him without an autopsy the following day.
Fourteen days later, on August 18, Abdur Razzak Fakir, claiming to be Rifat Hossain's uncle, filed a murder case at Daudkandi Model Police Station. Subsequently, on September 1, Rifat's mother, Nipa Begum, also filed a murder case regarding her son’s death in a Comilla court. The investigation is being conducted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Both cases name former Member of Parliament Engineer Abdus Sabur, Upazila Chairman Major (Retd.) Mohammad Ali Suman, and Mayor Naim Yusuf Sein, along with over four hundred leaders and activists of the Awami League and Union Parishad chairmen as accused.
Due to the absence of an autopsy report, both bodies were exhumed by police as per court order. Present during the exhumation were the Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Daudkandi, Redwan Islam, and the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Harunur Rashid of Daudkandi Model Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Harunur Rashid stated, "At that time, it was not possible to conduct an autopsy, so the family buried the bodies. Now, under court order, the bodies have been exhumed. They have already been sent to the morgue of Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy. After the autopsy, they will be returned to the family."
Assistant Commissioner Redwan Islam added, "The bodies have been exhumed for legal proceedings as per the court order. After the autopsy, they will be handed over to the relatives. Further actions will be taken based on the autopsy report."
