Bodies of three siblings recovered from Meghna, father still missing

The bodies of three siblings were recovered from the Meghna River in Narayanganj on Saturday (September 26), two days after a trawler carrying them to a wedding capsized during a storm.

Their father, Helal Uddin, remains missing as divers from the Fire Service and Civil Defence and members of the River Police continue the search.

The deceased were identified as Sajib, Samiya and infant Samin. They were among four passengers reported missing after the accident.

Deputy Director of Narayanganj Fire Service Abdullah Al Arefin said one body was recovered around 3am and two others about 8:30am near Al Mustafa Factory in Baidyerbazar.

“Of the four missing passengers, one body was recovered around 3:00am and two others were retrieved at 8:30am. However, Helal Uddin is still missing. Rescue teams are continuing the search,” Arefin said.

Officials and locals said 14 people from Cumilla and nearby areas boarded the trawler on Thursday afternoon to attend a wedding ceremony in Baidyerbazar Union.

The vessel reached the Sonamoyi area around 2pm when a sudden storm caused it to capsize. A nearby Aman Company vessel rushed to the scene and rescued nine passengers alive.

The same day, rescuers recovered the body of a 40-year-old woman, Rayesa Begum, who was also on the trawler.
