Bodies of two schoolchildren who went missing while bathing in a pond in Jamalpur's Melandaha upazila were recovered nearly six hours later, plunging the local community into mourning.

The tragic incident took place on Tuesday (June 9) in the Rayer Bakai area under Charbanipakuria Union.

The bodies were recovered from the pond around 11:00pm by local residents after an extensive search.

The deceased were identified as Al Nafi, 8, son of Abdur Rafiq, and Rifat, 8, son of Monju Mia. Both were residents of the same area and third-grade students at a local kindergarten school in Jhaugora.

According to local sources, the two friends went to the pond for a bath after playing football around 6:00pm. When they failed to return home, family members and residents began searching nearby areas. After several hours of frantic efforts, the children were found floating in the pond late at night.

Confirming the incident, Ward No. 5 member of Charbanipakuria Union Parishad, Md. Nurul Islam, said the two children died after drowning in the pond.

"The incident is deeply heartbreaking. Their deaths have cast a shadow of grief over the entire community," he said.

Md. Obaidur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Melandaha Police Station, said, "Police had received information about the incident and that the bodies were recovered with the assistance of local residents."

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the deaths are being examined, although preliminary findings indicate the children drowned while bathing in the pond.
