Tensions erupted in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari, after the body of Nural Pagla was forcibly exhumed from his grave and set ablaze. The incident also saw violent attacks and arson targeting Nural Pagla’s shrine, resulting in the deaths of two people.

Following Friday prayers on September 5, an agitated mob launched an assault on the shrine. The ensuing clashes between supporters and opponents left over a hundred injured.

According to locals, Nural Pagla was buried on August 23 in Ward No. 5 of Goalanda Municipality, in a tomb modeled after the Kaaba Sharif, standing about 12 feet above ground. The burial had sparked widespread unrest across Rajbari, with the Tawhidi community protesting what they described as a violation of religious sentiments.

On Friday, members of the community gathered at the local Eidgah ground for a protest rally. After the demonstration, the crowd marched to Nural Pagla’s shrine, where they launched the attack. Devotees of the shrine resisted, triggering violent clashes.

During the chaos, the mob dug up Nural Pagla’s body, brought it to the Dhaka-Khulna highway, and set it on fire.

Local health officials report that more than 100 people were injured in the violence. At least 22 were admitted to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, while 19 were transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Dr. S.M. Masud, the Rajbari Civil Surgeon, confirmed that two individuals died en route to the hospital.

Dr. Masud also stated that three injured patients left Faridpur Medical College Hospital voluntarily. Although the situation is currently under control, a tense atmosphere persists in the area. The health department and local administration are maintaining round-the-clock monitoring.

Following the violence, the vehicle of the Upazila Executive Officer's car and a police pickup were vandalised. In response, additional police forces and army personnel have been deployed to Gopalganj to reinforce security.

At approximately 7:30 pm, Rajbari Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations), Md. Sharif Al Rajib, said, “The situation is under control, but maximum precautions have been taken to prevent any further incidents.” He also confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that strict actions will be taken against those responsible.
