Police have recovered the body of a Bangladeshi young man from the Padma River in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, a week after he went missing.

The deceased, Shaukat Ali, 35, was the son of late Mizan from Tarapur Thuthapara area under Monakasha Union.

His body was found floating in the river late Saturday (May 16) night, confirmed Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman.

He had reportedly gone to India on May 9 to bring cattle. While his companions returned, he went missing.

Family members initially attempted to bury the body quietly after recovery, but police intervened following information and sent it to the district hospital morgue for autopsy.

Local residents alleged that Shaukat Ali may have been killed by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) while returning with cattle, before his body was dumped into the river.

Godaagari Naval Police Officer-in-Charge Jibon Roy said the body bore multiple sharp weapon injuries, particularly on the hands, legs and chest. He suspected the victim was hacked to death before the body was disposed of in the river.

Matiur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station, said, “The body was in a decomposed state, making it difficult to immediately confirm the cause of death.”

“The exact cause will be determined after the autopsy,” he said, adding that legal procedures are underway.

Commander of Chapainawabganj 53 BGB Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mustafizur Rahman said Border Guard Bangladesh is investigating the incident.
