Body of child recovered after falling from houseboat in Tangua Haor
The body of Rukaiya Nur (10), a child who went missing after falling from a tourist houseboat in Sunamganj's Tangua Haor, was recovered on Sunday morning. Her body was found floating in the Boulai river in the Mahatabpur area of Tahirpur upazila.
Rukaiya was the daughter of Shahnur Rahman from the Golchamot 2 No. Road area of Faridpur town. She went missing on Friday afternoon after falling from a moving houseboat in the Mahatabpur area of the Boulai river adjacent to Tangua Haor.
Police and local sources said the houseboat 'Safina Luxury Water Villa' had set off from Modhyonagar to Tangua Haor on Friday morning with 20 tourists, including Shahnur Rahman's family. In the afternoon, while returning from the haor towards the Jadukata river, Rukaiya suddenly fell into the river from the moving boat in the Mahatabpur area.
Locals and others on the houseboat began rescue efforts. Police and fire service members later conducted searches at the scene. Despite searches throughout Saturday, the child could not be found. Her body was found floating in the river on Sunday morning.
A tourist on the houseboat said the vessel had gone to Tangua Haor from Modhyonagar and was heading towards the Jadukata river when the child fell into the water unnoticed by her family.
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed confirmed the recovery of the body. He said the body would be handed over to the family after legal procedures.
