In Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila, police recovered the body of a missing agronomist, his hands and feet tied, three days after he went missing. On Friday, January 23, in the evening, locals spotted the body under the underpass of the Highway Expressway in the Surjanagar Bazar area of the upazila. Upon receiving the report, Shibchar Highway Police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex.

The deceased, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, worked as a research and development coordinator at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). He was the son of Matiur Rahman of Serajpur village, Mohipur Union, Patuakhali.

Family sources said that on January 21, at around 11 am, Shahidul Islam went missing while submitting a pay order at a Standard Chartered Bank branch in Gulshan, Dhaka. His mobile phone has also been unreachable since then. Following his disappearance, his father-in-law Abu Saleh Uddin Ahmed filed a general diary at Gulshan police station the same day.

Abu Saleh Uddin Ahmed said that, with Shahidul Islam missing for three days and his mobile phone switched off, they had filed the diary. The family is now in shock after learning about the recovery of his bound body. He urged that those responsible for this brutal murder be brought under the law swiftly.

Officer-in-charge of Shibchar Highway Police, Zahirul Islam, said that police recovered the body and sent it to the upazila health complex. Preparations for an autopsy are underway, and the case is being investigated seriously.
