Body of missing Fire Service diver recovered
The body of a Fire Service and Civil Defence diver, who went missing after falling from a speedboat into the Shitalakkhya river while clearing water hyacinth near the Narayanganj River Fire Station, was recovered this evening following an eight-hour search operation.
Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Abdullah Al Arefin confirmed the development around 7pm.
“The body of Sadik, 26, has just been recovered from the Kerosene Ghat area, not far from the scene,” he said.
The incident took place around 11am today at the Fire Ghat area in Nitaiganj, said Abdullah Al Arefin.
Sadik, who was from Kumrakandi village under Goalanda Bazar in Rajbari, was a trained diver at the Narayanganj River Fire Station. His primary duty was to recover bodies of drowning victims.
He also took part in the recovery of three bodies from a lake in Siddhirganj last month after they went missing while bathing.
According to his colleagues, he received the fire service medal last year as the best diver.
Abdullah Al Arefin said water hyacinth often accumulates in front of the jetty at the Narayanganj River Fire Station. Three members, including Sadik, were clearing it when the incident occurred.
Sadik, who was positioned at the front of the speedboat, lost his balance due to waves and fell into the river.
"Based on accounts from the two other members who were with him, we suspect he sustained a head injury while falling. He was a trained diver; without an injury, he would not have gone missing like this," said Arefin.
