Body of youth killed by BSF handed over after three days in Sylhet

The body of a Bangladeshi youth shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in the Dona border area of Kanaighat, Sylhet, has been handed over three days after the incident. The handover took place early Monday at around 2 am following a flag meeting between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF at the border.

The deceased, Abdur Rahman, 25, was the son of the late Khalilur Rahman of Borochatal Purba village in the Kanaighat upazila. On Friday afternoon, Abdur Rahman and several others entered India illegally. While returning to Bangladesh after buying buffaloes, they were fired upon by the BSF, and Abdur Rahman was shot and killed on the Indian side of the border.

The incident was reported the following day, Saturday, by which time the body had been left across the border in India. Upon receiving the news, the police visited the border area. After a flag meeting between the BGB and the BSF, the Meghalaya Police took the body. Following legal procedures and post-mortem examination, the body was finally handed over to Bangladesh authorities through the flag meeting on Monday night.

Abdul Awal, Officer-in-Charge of Kanaighat Police Station, said that three days after the incident, at around 2 am on Monday, the body, packed in a box, was handed over in the presence of Kanaighat police following the BGB-BSF flag meeting. Officials from the Meghalaya Police were also present. After completing legal procedures, the body was handed over to the family late at night. A general diary (GD) has been filed at the police station regarding the incident. The funeral is scheduled to be held in his native village on Tuesday afternoon.
