Bomb-like object recovered near polling centre in Gangni
Police have recovered a bomb-like object from near a polling centre in Gangni upazila of Meherpur. The incident occurred around 9:30am on Wednesday, February 11, in Hijolbaria village, about 100 yards from the polling centre designated for Meherpur-2 constituency.
Local sources said residents became suspicious after spotting a red shopping bag hanging from the grille of the Hijolbaria Eidgah ground. Inside the bag, they saw an object wrapped in black scotch tape and covered with cotton, prompting them to inform Gangni police station. The discovery triggered panic among local voters and residents.
Eyewitness and local resident Swapan Ali said the red bag hanging from the Eidgah grille caught attention in the morning. Police arrived promptly and safely recovered the object by submerging it in a bucket of water before taking it to the police station.
Preliminary suspicion suggests the object may have been placed there sometime on Tuesday night to create fear.
Gangni police station officer-in-charge Uttam Kumar Das said police recovered a cocktail-like object from the spot after receiving the information. He added that it is not yet clear who placed it there or for what purpose, and investigations are ongoing to identify those involved and uncover the motive.
