Leaders and activists of Mahila Dal staged a broom procession against Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency MP Mufti Amir Hamza over allegations of making derogatory remarks about reserved women’s seat MP Farida Yasmin.

They held the programme in Kushtia town on Tuesday afternoon (September 15). The procession started from the Court Station area of the town, paraded through various important roads and ended at Shaheed Chattar of Panch Rastar Mor. Brooms were seen in the hands of the participants at the time.

After the procession the Mahila Dal leaders and activists held a brief rally at Shaheed Chattar. Speakers there protested against Amir Hamza’s remarks and announced that they would continue programmes against him politically and organisationally.

The Mahila Dal leaders and activists alleged that Amir Hamza’s remarks about a woman public representative were indecent and disrespectful. They said that even if there are political differences, such comments about any woman public representative are not acceptable. They also demanded appropriate measures against the person concerned over the incident.

Local and party sources said Amir Hamza spoke at an exchange of views meeting organised by the upazila Jamaat-e-Islami at Allardarga Nuruzzaman Auditorium Hall in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia on Monday afternoon (September 14). There he raised the issue of a meeting of the administration on the appointment of fertiliser dealers. He alleged that the meeting was held with reserved women’s seat MP Farida Yasmin excluding the elected MPs.

At that time Amir Hamza further said it was unfortunate that the administration held the meeting excluding the MPs even though they are advisers of various committees. He opposed the allegation of party consideration in the appointment of fertiliser dealers and gave a warning to those concerned. After this speech Mahila Dal started the protest programme against him. Kushtia town Mahila Dal president Shilpi and leaders and activists of various levels of the organisation were present at the programme.
