BRTC to launch women-only buses in Dhaka from Tuesday
A special women-only bus service will be launched in the capital on Tuesday, August 18. Only women will be allowed as passengers on these buses. The bus service, operated by the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), will also have women drivers and conductors.
The service will be inaugurated at 10am at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot in Tejgaon. The initiative is part of the government's election manifesto implementation, according to a BRTC press release.
Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam will be present as the chief guest at the inauguration. Railways and Road Transport and Highways Division State Minister Habibur Rashid will attend as a special guest. Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Mohammad Ziaul Haque will also be present. BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Mollah will preside over the event.
BRTC said the initiative aims to ensure safe and comfortable public transport for women while also creating employment opportunities for women in the transport sector. The buses will operate on designated routes after the inauguration.
