BRUR forms five-member probe committee over shibir–chhatra dal clash

The administration of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) has formed a five-member investigation committee to examine the recent clash between activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on campus.

The committee has been instructed to submit its report promptly after reviewing video footage, witness statements and other relevant evidence.

The decision was announced in an office order issued on Tuesday (4 August) by the university's Registrar's Office.

The committee will be chaired by Md. Masud Rana, Director (Additional Charge) of the university's Public Relations, Information and Publications Office while Assistant Proctor Md. Abdullah-Al-Mahbub will serve as the member secretary.

The other members are: Md. Amir Sharif, Provost of Bijoy-24 Hall, Associate Professor Dr Md. Tanziul Islam of the Department of Political Science and Associate Professor Dr Md. Harun-Al-Rashid of the Department of Chemistry.


According to the office order, the committee has been tasked with determining the actual cause of the 3 August clash and submitting a report to the university authorities.


Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md. Shawkat Ali said the committee had been instructed to thoroughly examine all available evidence, including video footage, in order to establish the facts surrounding the incident as quickly as possible.

He added that disciplinary action would be taken against those found responsible in accordance with university regulations.

The Vice-Chancellor also said the committee would be empowered to take testimony from any relevant individual and analyse all evidence related to the incident if necessary.

According to university sources, the clash broke out on Monday afternoon during an exhibition titled "July Against Oppression", organised by Chhatra Shibir.

The violence reportedly erupted over the display of photographs of several convicted war criminals, leading to confrontations between activists of Chhatra Shibir and Chhatra Dal.

The clashes continued for nearly three hours, leaving at least 25 students injured. Five of the injured remain in serious condition and are receiving treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Tensions remained high the following day after both student organisations announced separate programmes at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat Police Station under the Rangpur Metropolitan Police, said officers were prepared to deal with any further disorder on campus.
