BTRC to take steps against AL's digital activities
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is set to take action to shut down the Awami League’s activities across digital and online platforms, including its official Facebook page.
Fayez Ahmed Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, confirmed the development on Sunday.
“We are awaiting the official circular from the Council of Advisers. Once it is issued, formal letters will be sent—via BTRC—to Meta and other online platforms, requesting the removal or restriction of the Awami League’s pages and digital operations,” he said.
Tayyeb added, “We expect a swift response since the requests will be routed through BTRC.”
The Awami League operates a verified Facebook page titled Bangladesh Awami League, which has nearly four million followers. Following the government's decision to ban all activities of the party on Saturday night, the page published a protest post, followed by an official statement. Activity on the page has continued regularly since then.
The continued online presence has raised concerns about the speed and effectiveness of enforcing the ban in cyberspace.
