BU teachers to resume classes, exams from today
Teachers of Barishal University (BU) have announced their return to classes and examinations, while continuing their non-cooperation movement in administrative activities, issuing an ultimatum over resolving the ongoing crisis.
The decision was announced in a statement by the “Barishal University Teachers’ Association” following a general meeting held on Sunday (May 3). Accordingly, all academic activities, including classes and exams, resumed from Monday (May 4).
Associate Professor Hafiz Ashraful Haque of the Department of Coastal Studies and Disaster Management confirmed that while academic activities will continue, the teachers’ non-cooperation protest against the vice-chancellor will remain in force in administrative affairs.
The move comes after a tripartite meeting held on April 30 involving the vice-chancellor, syndicate members, the Barishal divisional commissioner and university deans.
The meeting assured that the ongoing crisis would be resolved in line with existing laws, policies and practices at the upcoming syndicate meeting scheduled for May 8.
Teachers said they agreed to return to academic duties based on that assurance. However, they warned that if no satisfactory resolution is reached at the May 8 meeting, they will launch a tougher movement schedule from May 10 alongside the ongoing non-cooperation programme.
According to university sources, teachers had been observing hunger strike, work abstention, complete shutdown and non-cooperation movement since April 22, pressing for a set of demands, including promotions.
The April 30 meeting had urged teachers to withdraw from movement and resume academic activities, promising a resolution to the crisis—prompting the latest decision.
