A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student has been arrested under the Cyber Security Act following allegations of sexual harassment and rape-related comments on social media.

Police identified the student as Shanto Roy, who was detained early Wednesday (October 22) after a case was filed against him, confirmed Investigation Officer SI Md. Shahjahan Siraj.

According to Chawkbazar Police Station SI Abdur Razzak, the arrest came after BUET students protested allegations that Shanto had made obscene, derogatory, and sexually offensive remarks about women on Reddit using an anonymous account. Students also alleged that he admitted to rape in one of his posts.

In response, BUET’s Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), led by Director Prof. Dr. AKM Masud, issued a written notice temporarily expelling the accused student.

Tension escalated on campus as students gathered overnight demanding exemplary punishment. By early morning, hundreds assembled in front of the DSW office near the central playground, pressing for further disciplinary action.
