After more than two decades, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Mushfiq Uddin Tagor, a convict in BUET student Sabekun Nahar Sony murder case, from capital's Azimpur.

Mushfiq Uddin Togor, 50, was arrested with a revolver and 156 rounds of ammunition on Thursday night (September 18), according to a statement issued by RAB headquarters later that night.

In a brief statement, Rab said Tagor had been taken into custody and that further details would be disclosed at a press conference scheduled for 11:00am on Friday at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.

The murder took place on June 8, 2002, during a violent clash between rival factions of the student political group Chhatra Dal at Salimullah Muslim (SM) Hall of the University of Dhaka. The conflict reportedly stemmed from a dispute over tender-related issues involving supporters of then-Chhatra Dal president Mokammel Hayat Khan and a group led by Mushfiq Uddin Togor.

Sabekun Nahar Sony, a student from the 1999 batch of BUET's Chemical Engineering Department, was fatally shot while returning to his hall after class. Though not involved in the clash, she became a victim of the violence. Her death sparked widespread outrage and protests across Dhaka and other parts of the country, with students and civil society demanding justice.

Mushfiq Uddin Togor had been absconding since the incident. His arrest is considered a major development in the long-stalled investigation. Further legal proceedings are expected following the press briefing.
