Four buffaloes that were kept tied in the mud surrounding a homestead 24 hours a day for three consecutive months have finally been rescued in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah. Witnessing the miserable condition of the animals, local villagers often felt distressed. Although several people urged the owner, Abdul Alim, to move the buffaloes out of the mud, their requests went unheeded. Later, after the issue went viral on social media, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sajjad Hossain stepped forward to rescue the animals.

UNO Sajjad Hossain visited Abdul Alim's house in Gokulnagar village under Maheshpur upazila on Sunday (August 16) after evening. He arranged to untie the four buffaloes from the mud and move them to dry ground adjacent to the house. At the same time, he directed the owner to create a safe and suitable environment for the buffaloes within the next 15 days.

UNO Sajjad Hossain stated that the family has been instructed to arrange a safe place and adequate food for the buffaloes. He warned that legal action would be taken against them if a suitable environment for the animals is not established within 15 days.

Local residents shared that the four buffaloes belonging to Abdul Alim, son of the late Fozar Ali of Gokulnagar village, were tied in the thick mud near his house. Although the buffaloes were previously taken to the fields for grazing, it had not been possible since the monsoon season began three months ago, forcing the animals to remain tethered in the mud for an extended period.

Many locals considered the situation inhumane. Some even requested Abdul Alim to relocate the buffaloes from the mud, but he took no action. Later, local environmental activist Nazmul Hasan witnessed the situation, took photographs of the buffaloes' plight, and posted them on social media.

The post caught the attention of Maheshpur UNO Sajjad Hossain, who visited the house accompanied by environmental activist Nazmul Hasan. Upon arrival, he arranged to free the four buffaloes from the mud and move them to dry ground. The owner, Abdul Alim, was not at home at the time.

Abdul Alim's mother, Satya Khatun, said that they had asked him to sell the buffaloes instead of subjecting them to such suffering, but Alim did not listen. She added that since the women of the household were afraid to go near the buffaloes, it was impossible for them to move the animals themselves.

Environmental activist Nazmul Hasan remarked that villagers felt pained seeing the suffering of the buffaloes, yet no initiative had been taken to remove the animals from the mud for a long time. He subsequently highlighted the matter on social media, prompting the UNO to visit the site and liberate the four buffaloes from their muddy captivity.
