Burglars looted an estimated 70 bhori of gold, 600 bhori of silver and cash from a jewellery shop in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Monday (January 5).

The theft took place at New Rana Jewellers in Chandrima Market during the early hours today.

Shop owner Masud Rana said, he closed the store around 11:00pm on Sunday and returned at about 10:00am the next day to find the padlocks of the collapsible gate and shutter broken and the shop ransacked.

“All the gold and silver, including the safe, were taken away,” Rana said. “I had about 50 bhori of my own gold and 20 bhori kept as pledged items. The thieves also stole around 600 bhori of silver, purchase receipts and Tk 400,000 in cash.”

He estimated the value of the stolen gold at Tk 15.4 million and the silver at Tk 2.16 million.

Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of Police (Tejgaon Division), said, "Police have been informed of the incident and multiple teams are working at the scene to investigate the burglary."
