The Habiganj Motor Owners Group has suspended bus services on all internal routes in Habiganj for an indefinite period. Passengers are facing extreme hardship as the decision came into effect from Tuesday morning (May 12).

The organization said that the program has been taken in protest against the vandalism of buses and beating of workers in Moulvibazar.

The motor owners group claims that on May 10, attacks, vandalism and attacks on workers occurred on the non-stop 'express' bus service of the Moulvibazar Motor Owners Group.

The organization said that buses have been plying on the Habiganj-Sylhet via Moulvibazar route for 52 years.

Office-going passengers, students and long-distance passengers are facing extreme hardship due to the sudden suspension of bus services. Many are seen waiting for a long time for alternative vehicles, while some try to reach their destinations in small vehicles by paying additional fares.

Habiganj Motor Owners Group member secretary Abu Moin Chowdhury Sohel said that the administration has taken time till 5pm to ensure uninterrupted bus movement through Moulvibazar. If the problem is not resolved within the stipulated time, a larger movement including blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet highway may be called.

There is tension between transport workers and owners of the two districts over the incident. Sources concerned said that the administration may take the initiative to hold talks to normalize the situation.
