Bus workers block road in front of Mahakhali terminal
A group of transport workers are protesting by blocking the road in front of Mahakhali Bus Terminal in Dhaka. Their blockade has caused severe traffic congestion in Mahakhali as well as in Banani, Gulshan, Tejgaon and Satrasta areas.
Police Sergeant Belal Hossain, who is on duty in the Mahakhali area, said, "Workers have blocked both sides of the road in front of Mahakhali terminal. This has caused massive traffic congestion in the entire area."
However, the police official could not immediately provide details about the workers' demands.
Recently, police began removing idle buses from Mahakhali to Purbachal. This has created discontent among bus owners and workers, who said their frustration over the matter led them to block the road.
Kamrul Hasan, who identified himself as a bus driver, said, "Whenever police find a vehicle outside the terminal, they dump it and issue a wrecker bill."
According to him, there is no adequate security where buses are being asked to be kept in Purbachal.
"Even vehicle batteries are being stolen. We want relief from this harassment. We will not withdraw the blockade unless these issues are resolved," he said.
Bus drivers have placed several buses across the road, halting traffic movement.
Slogans were heard at the blockade site on various issues, including the resignation of the Additional Commissioner of Police, bus dumping, fines and police harassment.
