Businessman shot, 25 bhori gold looted in Keraniganj

A group of miscreants held a gold trader and his brother hostage at gunpoint in Keraniganj, Dhaka, shot them and looted around 20 to 25 bhori of gold. Later, the two injured, Antar Sarkar (25) and his cousin Rajib Sarkar (20), were rescued in a bullet-hit condition and admitted to Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital.

The incident took place in Hazratpur of Keraniganj on Monday evening, September 21.

According to police and local sources, injured Antar Sarkar runs a jewellery business at Hazratpur Bazar in Keraniganj. As usual, after closing his shop in the evening, Antar Sarkar, his father Mitai Sarkar and cousin Rajib left for their home in Atipara of Singair upazila in Manikganj in an auto-rickshaw, carrying gold ornaments and cash.

When the auto-rickshaw reached the Hazratpur area of Keraniganj around 7:30pm, nine armed miscreants on three motorcycles and several others arriving in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw intercepted them. The miscreants continuously attacked and fired at the legs of Antar and Rajib. They then snatched the tiffin box full of gold ornaments. While leaving, the miscreants detonated five to six bombs to create panic in the area and fled quickly.

Antar Sarkar said there were about 20 to 25 bhori of gold ornaments in the snatched tiffin box.

Confirming the incident, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Selim Hossain of the DMCH police camp said two people were rescued in a bullet-hit condition and brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College. They are currently undergoing treatment, and the matter has been reported to the concerned police station.
