CA mourns death of Badruddin Umar
Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, has expressed profound grief over the death of renowned intellectual, politician, and progressive thinker Badruddin Umar.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday, the Chief Adviser described Umar as a "shining beacon" in the country’s struggle for freedom of thought and progressive values. Beginning his academic career at the University of Dhaka and later joining Rajshahi University, Umar played a significant role in shaping Bangladesh’s intellectual and political landscape.
“His active involvement in the Language Movement, his scholarly work, his fierce resistance to colonial mindsets, and his unwavering commitment to socialist ideology have greatly enriched our intellectual heritage,” said Professor Yunus.
Badruddin Umar, President of the National Liberation Council, was known not only as a theorist but also as a lifelong activist who consistently spoke out against injustice. He was an early advocate of mass uprisings to resist fascist and autocratic regimes and recognised the July Movement as an unprecedented people’s uprising in the subcontinent.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to national life as a writer and public intellectual, the government had nominated Umar for the prestigious Independence Award.
Calling his death an “irreparable loss” to the nation, Professor Yunus said, “His writings and philosophy will continue to inspire future generations of thoughtful individuals.”
The Chief Adviser extended his heartfelt condolences to Badruddin Umar’s bereaved family, colleagues, and well-wishers.
Badruddin Umar passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 94 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. He had been suffering from various age-related complications for an extended period.
