Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep grief over the death of language movement veteran, poet, essayist and Rabindra scholar Ahmad Rafique. He passed away on Thursday night (October 2) while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka.

In a condolence message, the Chief Adviser said Ahmad Rafique was “a prominent witness and a courageous voice of the Language Movement.” He described him as a distinguished poet, essayist, researcher and a guiding light in Rabindra studies.

Through the authorship and editing of more than one hundred books, Rafique enriched the history of Bangla literature, culture and the Language Movement, Yunus noted. He added that Rafique’s contribution to Rabindra studies earned equal respect in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Tagore Research Institute of Kolkata also honored him with the title of Rabindratattwacharya, in recognition of his scholarship.

“The passing of Ahmad Rafique is an irreparable loss to the cultural and free-thinking sphere of our country,” Yunus said, adding that despite his health challenges, Rafique continued to spread the light of knowledge until his final days.

The Chief Adviser prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and said, “The life and work of Ahmad Rafique will inspire future generations. The nation will remember him with gratitude.”

He also conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, well-wishers and admirers in the literary and cultural community.
