Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus is set to visit New York on September 22 to attend the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain confirmed about the visit at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday (September 17).

He said, "Bangladesh will present firm positions on key global issues, including the Rohingya crisis, democratic progress, climate change, and peacekeeping operations."

This year’s UNGA theme, “Better Together: Eighty Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” underscores the need for coordinated global action to address conflicts, human rights concerns, and climate change, the adviser noted.

As part of the session, Bangladesh has taken the initiative to organise the first-ever High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar on September 30. The event follows recent dialogues with international partners in Cox’s Bazar.

Dr. Yunus is also scheduled to join a high-level meeting on September 25 marking the 30th anniversary of the World Youth Programme. He will address the General Assembly on September 26, focusing on Bangladesh’s democratic reforms, peacekeeping contributions, climate justice, sustainable development, migration, artificial intelligence, and a durable solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict.

During the visit, he is expected to hold bilateral meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, US President Donald Trump, and other world leaders. He will also represent Bangladesh at sideline forums, including the Commonwealth, OIC, G-77, and BIMSTEC.

Adviser Touhid Hossain said Bangladesh’s participation at the UNGA will showcase the country’s reform process and commitment to holding fair national elections. “Our goal is to reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people on the world stage,” he said.
