Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus will apprise the international community of Bangladesh’s upcoming national election during his visit to the United States, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters in New York on Tuesday.

Alam said the election is scheduled to be held in the first half of February next year.

The Chief Adviser will address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26, where he is expected to highlight the interim government’s reform initiatives over the past 14 months, along with measures for economic recovery and democratic transition.

“The core message is that a national election will be held by February 15. It will be free, fair, peaceful, and participatory,” Alam said.

According to him, world leaders have already assured their support for the polls. He added that, as seen in recent DUCSU and JUCSU elections, voters will be able to exercise their franchise freely.

Responding to questions, the press secretary said Dr Yunus’s UN address will also cover government activities, election preparations, judicial processes, and the Rohingya issue. He noted that the interim government maintains regular dialogue with political parties and that there is no gap in relations.

On the Awami League’s past tenure, Alam alleged that its 15 years in power were marked by killings, enforced disappearances, and thousands of false cases. “Now look at the Awami League — they have no friends left,” he added.
