Canada issues travel advisory for Bangladesh
The Government of Canada has issued a high-level travel advisory for its citizens regarding visits to Bangladesh, citing risks of political unrest, crime and terrorism.
In a notice recently published on its website, the Canadian government said that since July 2024, thousands of people have been killed in violence in Bangladesh. Although the situation is currently relatively calm, sudden outbreaks of violent protests and clashes may occur at any time.
Travellers have been advised to exercise heightened caution in several key areas of Dhaka, including the National Parliament complex, the Secretariat, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Dhaka University area, Motijheel, Naya Paltan, Paltan, Shahbagh, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Uttara and Karwan Bazar.
The advisory has also urged citizens to completely avoid travelling to the three districts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts—Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban—due to recurring political violence, ethnic conflict, abductions, and drug and arms smuggling. Those intending to travel there are advised to notify local authorities at least 10 days in advance.
Additionally, the advisory cautioned against women travelling alone, using public transport at night, or travelling outside Dhaka. It also warned of potential terrorist attacks during religious festivals and public gatherings, and recommended avoiding travel during strikes and blockades.
