Cantonment OC withdrawn amid controversy

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Cantonment Police Station, Md Rakibul Islam, has been withdrawn over an audio recording that spread on social media.

DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter on Thursday, September 17.

In the audio recently circulating on social media, a conversation involving OC Rakibul Islam about the return of deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country can be heard. The authenticity of the audio could not be independently verified.

In the audio, he can be heard saying that "nothing will happen" if Sheikh Hasina returns in December. He also commented on the capability of the police and said Sheikh Hasina should return to the country this month instead of waiting until December.

The audio spread widely on Facebook, various social media platforms and news outlets over the past two days. Amid discussion and criticism in various quarters, the DMP Commissioner announced the decision to withdraw OC Rakibul Islam.

Various reports mentioned that Rakibul Hasan was appointed as OC of Cantonment Police Station in March this year.
