Carrying or transferring another’s NID punishable: EC
The Election Commission (EC) has issued a warning that carrying or transferring another person’s National Identity (NID) card is a punishable offence.
The information was conveyed in a letter signed by Md Ruhul Amin Mallik, Director of the Public Relations Division of the EC Secretariat, on Thursday (January 22).
The letter stated that recently, some individuals have been collecting voters’ personal information and NID cards under the guise of election campaigning, according to complaints received by the Election Commission. Under the National Identity Registration Act, 2010, no individual is permitted to carry or transfer another person’s NID.
The letter further stated that, under Rule 4 of the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates in the Parliamentary Election, 2025, no political party, candidate, or anyone acting on their behalf may provide or promise to provide any kind of donation, gift, or contribution to individuals, groups, or organisations residing in the election area.
The Election Commission said that such activities constitute punishable offences under election laws and regulations. It has therefore called on all citizens and organisations to refrain from engaging in such activities.
Notably, the BNP recently filed a written complaint with the Election Commission against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, alleging the collection of voters’ NID cards under the guise of election campaigning.
