A murder case has been filed against 38 individuals, including local Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shimul Billal, over the brutal killing of three members of a single family in Muradnagar of Cumilla. Two suspects have been arrested during a joint operation conducted by the army and police.
Mahfuzur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bangra Bazar Police Station, said, “Rikta Begum, daughter of the victim Ruby Akter, filed the case on Friday night (July 4). Along with the 38 named individuals, 20 to 25 unidentified persons have also been accused in the case.”
Early Saturday (July 5), an army team led by Captain Adil Shahriar conducted a raid in Muradnagar’s Akabpur area and detained two suspects—Md. Sabir Ahmed (48) and Md. Nazim Uddin Babul (56). They were later handed over to the police for interrogation.
Earlier, on Thursday morning (July 3) around 9.00am, four members of a family were attacked in Koribari village over allegations of mobile phone theft. In the attack, Khalilur Rahman's wife Rokshana Begum (also known as Ruby), 53, son Rasel Mia, 35, and daughter Taspiya Akter (also known as Jonaki), 29, were killed. Another daughter, Ruma Akter, 28, was seriously injured and is now undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
Locals claimed that the family was involved in drug-related activities. Police believe the attack may have been carried out by angry villagers in response to the alleged phone theft.
The area remains tense following the incident. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
