Case filed against 23 BSL leaders over July Memorial arson in Shariatpur
A case has been filed under the anti-terrorism law against 23 leaders and activists of the Chhatra League over a fire at the July Memorial in Shariatpur located near the central Shaheed Minar in Shariatpur Sadar.
The case was filed at Palong Model Police Station by Sub-Inspector Saidul Islam on Saturday night (28 March).
The accused include Mohsin Matbor, convener of the district committee of the banned Chhatra League, along with 22 other members. Police have arrested one of the suspects, 21-year-old Riazul Islam, in connection with the incident.
According to police and local sources Chhatra League activists and supporters set fire to the memorial in Shariatpur town on Thursday night (26 March). A video of the incident later circulated on Facebook, drawing immediate attention from local authorities and various organizations.
OC Shah Alam of Palong Model Police Station said that CCTV footage from around the memorial was analyzed to identify the accused. Preliminary investigations indicate that Mohsin Matbor was the main planner of the arson.
He added that Riazul Islam has been sent to the district jail through the court, and police operations to arrest the remaining suspects are ongoing.
