Case filed against 8 for torturing schoolgirl and youth tied to tree, prime accused arrested
A case has been filed over the incident of torturing a schoolgirl and a young man by tying them to a tree in Kashiani, Gopalganj, following allegations of a romantic relationship. Eight individuals have been named in the case, along with 5-6 unidentified accused. Police have already arrested the prime accused, Nayan Goldar.
The father of the tortured youth, Shibnath Barai, filed the case with Kashiani Police Station on Sunday (August 2) night. The prime accused, Nayan Goldar, was arrested from Rajair upazila in Madaripur early the same day.
According to the case's first information report (FIR), on July 28 during the tiffin break, an eighth-grade student of Rahuthar Udayan Bidyapith High School and a 12th-grade student of a college in Gopalganj Sadar upazila were talking in the school premises. At that time, the accused caught them, took them inside the school, tied them to a tree and beat them .
The FIR further stated that the schoolgirl was sexually harassed, and the young man was demanded Tk 5,000 as extortion. They were threatened that their photos would be circulated on social media if they did not pay the money. Later, when a relative of the youth paid the money, they were released .
The following day, after a video of the torture went viral on social media, the schoolgirl attempted suicide by consuming poison due to humiliation and mental pressure. She was later admitted to hospital. Police said she is currently recovering .
Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Kashiani and Muksudpur circle, Nafisur Rahman, said the prime accused has been arrested. Operations are underway to arrest the other accused in the case.
