Case filed against four over killing of seven jackals in Barishal

The forest department has filed a case against four individuals under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, over the killing of seven jackals in Barishal city.

Barishal Divisional Forest Officer Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter on Sunday, July 12.

The accused are Nurul Islam, 33; Mohammad Haris, 36; Kamal Khalifa, 32; and Mohammad Jamal Khalifa, 32. All are residents of Ward 26 of Barishal city.

The forest department said Barishal Sadar Range Officer Arifur Rahman was assigned to investigate the incident. He submitted his investigation report on July 8, based on which the decision to file the case was made. The range officer then filed the case as plaintiff with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

Range Officer Arifur Rahman said locals beat and hacked the jackals to death. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the jackals' meat was consumed. The matter will be clarified after investigation.

Locals said seven jackals were killed in the Maidankhola area of Ward 26 on July 2. A video of the incident later went viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion.
