Case filed against Mufti Faizul Karim for 'defamatory, malicious' remarks about MP
A case has been filed against Islami Andolan Bangladesh's senior Nayeb-e-Amir Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim for allegedly spreading defamatory and hateful remarks on social media about BNP MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury from Cumilla-6 constituency.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cumilla Sadar South Model Police Station Rakibul Islam confirmed the matter on Wednesday (June 24). Earlier, Jalal Ahmed Khokon Talukder filed the case at the Sadar South Model Police Station on June 20.
Apart from Mufti Faizul Karim, Quader Miyaji, a resident of Cumilla Sadar South area, and several unidentified others have been named as accused in the case.
The case statement states that on June 19, insults, satire and defamatory statements were circulated about MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury on various Facebook IDs and YouTube channels. It is also alleged that satirical comments were made about his beard, hat and clothes in a video. In addition, misleading information was spread by using his picture on social media, calling him a 'secret Awami League leader' and 'Islamophobic'.
The statement also states that an attempt was made to tarnish the political, social and personal reputation of the MP through these statements and campaigns.
However, the plaintiff in the case, Jalal Ahmed Khokon Talukder, claimed to be the senior joint convener of Ward No. 26 of the Metropolitan Jubo Dal, but the Cumilla Metropolitan Jubo Dal said that he is not a member of any level of the organization.
Metropolitan Jubo Dal Member Secretary Roman Hasan said that Khokon Talukder was previously involved in Jubo League politics. He currently has no organizational ties with the Jubo Dal.
The plaintiff, Khokon Talukder, however, claimed that he filed the case in the interest of protecting the honor of a Jubo Dal worker and a BNP MP.
In this regard, Sadar South Model Police Station OC Rakibul Islam said that the case has been accepted on the instructions of higher authorities. Further legal action will be taken through investigation.
