Case filed over attack on NCP convoy, 11 named
A case has been filed over the attack on the convoy of central leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Habiganj, naming district Chhatra Dal president Shah Rajib Ahmed Ringon as the prime accused. Besides naming 11 individuals, the case also lists 100 unnamed others as accused.
The central leaders of the NCP submitted the complaint to the Habiganj Superintendent of Police at the Kamaichhara Police Outpost in Bahubal upazila on Wednesday night. Tanmay Taher, convener of Habiganj district Juba Shaktiv, is the plaintiff.
The complaint names a total of 11 individuals, including Arifuzzaman Riyad, general secretary of Habiganj Brindaban Government College Chhatra Dal.
Speaking to journalists after submitting the complaint, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said, "If the accused are arrested by tonight, we will at least believe that there is some rule of law in the country. Otherwise, we will consider the government as a 'mafia government'."
On Tuesday evening, an attack took place on the convoy of NCP central leaders, including Sarjis Alam and Nasiruddin Patwari, while they were returning after a street rally in the Town Hall area of Habiganj city. They took shelter in a branch of Sonali Bank, and police later rescued them and took them to the Circuit House. Police also fired a sound grenade to control the situation.
The NCP has blamed the followers of local MP and Whip G K Gaush, along with leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, for the attack, claiming that several of their leaders and activists were injured.
NCP district member secretary Mahbubul Bari Chowdhury Mubin is undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Critically injured activist Alif Ahmed has been airlifted to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka.
Following the incident, the NCP announced a protest in Habiganj on Wednesday, suspending its scheduled programme in Moulvibazar. In response, the district Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal and BNP announced counter-programmes. The district administration imposed Section 144 in the municipal area of Habiganj to control the law and order situation.
